Champion for Children and Youth

Becky Evans, former GA State House Rep from 2018-2024, proud wife, mother of 3, retired healthcare industry executive, non-profit co-founder, and DeKalb public schools volunteer, is passionate about improving the lives of children and youth. She is included on the Top 10 List of Georgia Democratic Most Effective Legislators, by the Center for Effective Lawmaking, of the 157th State House, 2023/24, for her legislation, Evidence Based Literacy Instruction Certification, requiring Georgia’s teacher preparation programs, Professional Standards, and Dept of Early Care and Learning to be aligned with evidence-based literacy instruction, aka the Science of Reading, or Structured Literacy. She believes every child, whether in DeKalb, Georgia or Haiti, deserves access to a high quality education, that our children and youth deserve second chances when they make a mistake, and that literacy is the foundation of a thriving community and strong economy.

Becky, as a GA Reads Ambassador, initiated and co-convened “Setting the Table: Advancing Literacy in DeKalb Together”, on October 30th 2025, along with the DeKalb Schools Educational Foundation, the DeKalb County School District, Georgia Piedmont Technical College, DeKalb County, United Way and Reach Out and Read, bringing over 94 people involved with literacy from across DeKalb to explore how we can create an ecosystem of literacy, from birth to adulthood. She is an advocate for the DeKalb Initiative for Children and Families to lead a community collaborative to improve literacy in DeKalb.

Guiding Principles

In her final year at Emory (1983), she was a member of the first class of interns at the Carter Center. Addressing the class, Jimmy Carter quoted his beloved teacher, Miss Julia Coleman, and said “we must adjust to changing times and still hold to unchanging principles.” Becky was a community volunteer for 25 years before she served in the State House, and she is thankful to return to her roots of community service in DeKalb and Georgia.
